EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Cyprus

Alternative title: Liars in Cyprus

The next country might not have a lot of success at Eurovision, but it came close to it in 2018 with something very hot. Here is Cyprus’ entry: Silia Kapsis — Liar

17-year-old Vasiliki Silia Kapsis (December 5, 2006) is an Australian-Cypriot singer, dancer, and actress. She was the second artist chosen for Eurovision when it was announced on September 25, 2023. Her song “Liar” was released on February 29, 2024. Silia is the youngest contestant this year.

Straight to my top 10, straight to my playlist, and quite frankly, never left the top 3. Literally got nothing else to say other than, well, nail the staging. Bring the gold. 10/10

Silia will open the 1st semi-final on May 7 followed by Serbia

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Poland

Alternative title: Building Polish Towers

30 years after debuting at the contest with a silver medal, the 2-time JESC winners are building a tower to victory, we hope. Here is Poland’s entry: Luna — The Tower

24-year-old Aleksandra Katarzyna Wielgomas (Luna, August 28, 1999) is a Polish singer and songwriter. She was internally chosen to represent Poland and released the song the same day on February 19, 2024.

Date chosen: February 19, 2024

I can actually dig this. It’s a small step up from Solo. I liked how it started building up at the end, much like the title of this song. Good effort from Poland. I hope they can build a tower in Malmo (or on stage at least), but at the same time not actually build one. 7.5/10.

Luna will perform 6th in the 1st semi-final on May 7 between Ukraine and Croatia

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Spain

Alternative title: Spanish Zorras Come Out to Play

They won twice in the 60s and nabbed a JESC win back in 2004, and are now planning to host JESC 2024. Here is Spain’s entry: Nebulossa — Zorra

Husband and wife duo Mark Dasousa (January 2, 1974) and Maria Bas (September 18, 1968) are the Spanish electropop geniuses behind Nebulossa. They won the 2024 edition of Benidorm Fest on February 3, 2024. The national final has been seeing Top 20 results at Eurovision since it began in 2022.

I didn’t get to watch Benidorm this year, but I have heard that this is a good one since the songs were released in January, and after watching the live performance… I agree. It’s got the 80s feel if you’re into that. I would say just watch the national final performance at the bottom of this post because they went all out, and I appreciate that. I’ll give it an 8/10. The music might not be to my taste, but I can see why people like it so much

Although they’re automatic qualifiers, Nebulossa will perform in the 2nd semi-final on May 9 between Latvia and San Marino

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Iceland

Alternative title: Being Scared of Heights in Iceland

Despite being the only Nordic country not to win Eurovision, this country got some memorable entries under its belt. Here is Iceland’s entry: Hera Bjork — Scared of Heights

52-year-old Hera Bjork Þórhallsdóttir (March 29, 1972) is an Icelandic singer and a previous Eurovision participant. She represented Iceland at the 2010 contest in Oslo with Je ne sais quoi where she finished 19th. She won the 2024 edition of Söngvakeppnin on March 2, 2024. Still, because Iceland wanted to separate the national final from Eurovision due to Israel’s participation, they waited until March 11 to officially confirm participation.

It’s not as bad as people make it out to be, but they also had Palestinian singer Bashar Murad competing, which sparked the whole arc with Iceland and Israel. Either way, I don’t think Hera will have as much success as she did in 2010. It’s missing a lot to be frank, but it’s still not a bad effort. 6.5/10

Hera will perform 8th in the 1st semi-final on May 7 between Croatia and Slovenia (although Germany will perform before Iceland)

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Greece

Alternative title: The 2024 Greek Tour

Almost 2 decades after winning Eurovision, this country is on a hunt for a second, and personally, I think they should. Here is Greece’s entry: Marina Satti — Zari

37-year-old Marina Satti (December 26, 1986) is a Greek singer, songwriter, actress, and music producer. She was chosen internally on October 24, 2023 to fly the Greek flag in Malmo. Her song was released on March 7, 2024 on YouTube.

I think I haven’t revealed who was my number one this year, and folks… here it is. Greece is my number one this year. The song is chaotic in a good way (much like my brain is) and I cannot wait to see how she will pull off the single shot take on stage. It’s a perfect 10. Athens (or any other Greek city) 2025, anyone?

Marina will perform 3rd in the 2nd semi-final on May 9 between Albania and Switzerland

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Azerbaijan

Alternative title: Being Taken For a Ride in Azerbaijan

The one-time champs are on the host seat for today’s post. Here is Azerbaijan’s entry: Fahree ft Ilkin Dovlatov — ÖzünlÉ™ Apar

29-year-old Fakhri Ismayilov (Fahree, April 11, 1995) is an Azerbaijan singer and songwriter. He will be joined on stage by 33-year-old mugham singer Ilkin Dovlatov (June 16, 1990). Fahree was chosen to represent the country on March 7, 2024. 8 days later, his song was released on YouTube, where it was also announced that Ilkin will be joining him on stage. It was the last song to be revealed for 2024

I appreciate the traditional sounds that Azerbaijan is bringing and I also appreciate that they’re sending something in Azerbaijan (even if partially) but it feels like it’s in the middle for me. Fahree’s voice kinda makes up for it, so I can’t be too mad about it. I would give it a 7/10.

Fahree and Ilkin will perform 12th in the first semi-final on May 7 between Moldova and Australia (although Sweden will perform before Azerbaijan)

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Slovenia

Alternative title: My Name is Veronika and I’m Coming From Slovenia

Today we’re looking at another former member of Yugoslavia. Here is Slovenia’s entry: Raiven — Veronika

Having just turned 28, Sara Briški Cirman (Raiven, April 26, 1996) is a Slovenian singer, songwriter, and harpist. She was chosen to represent Slovenia on December 12, 2023. Her song Veronika came out on January 20, 2024. It was the second song revealed after France.

I have wanted Raiven to represent Slovenia for a while, so I’m happy she’s finally getting that chance. The song is mysterious, it’s really aesthetically pleasing. It was partially written by Bojan Cvjeticanin, lead singer of last year’s entrant Joker Out, so I knew it would be good. I’m not sure how she will stage this, but fingers crossed. 8/10.

Raiven will perform 9th in the 1st semi-final on May 7, between Iceland and Finland (although Germany will perform before Slovenia)

Tomorrow we will be taken to Azerbaijan

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Croatia

Alternative title: Baby Lasagna — A New Croatian Delicacy

This country is having a ball on the betting odds as of late. They won Eurovision once as part of Yugoslavia and they won JESC as an independent. They are looking to win the senior edition for the first time as an independent nation. Here is Croatia’s entry: Baby Lasagna — Rim Tim Tagi Dim

28-year-old Marko PuriÅ¡ić (Baby Lasagna, July 5, 1995) is a Croatian singer-songwriter and music producer. He was originally a backup when Croatia’s HRT announced the 24 acts for Dora 2024 but was let in after an act dropped out. He has soared to victory at the national final on February 25, 2024, and has become one of the most talked about Croatian entries in Eurovision history

I’m giving it a 9.5/10. It’s cheeky, it’s excellent. The beat is easy to follow. Croatia is hungry for a win, and I will be more than happy to give it to them (through voting of course). I mentioned to another Twitter user that, in comparison to Cha Cha Cha, it took me a few listens to love this song, as opposed to immediately for the former. Well done, Croatia, and hope the staging will be just as epic

Baby Lasagna will perform 7th in the 1st semi-final on May 7 between Poland and Iceland

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: United Kingdom

Alternative title: United Kingdom Gets Dizzy

Last year’s hosts and 5-time champs are also still riding on a high since their 2nd place finish in 2022. Here is United Kingdom’s entry: Olly Alexander — Dizzy

33-year-old Oliver Alexander Thornton (July 15, 1990) is a British singer-songwriter and LGBT activist. He was known for being the lead singer of Years & Years. He made the announcement on an episode of Strictly Come Dancing on December 16, 2023. His song Dizzy was released on March 1, 2024.

For all the hype, I’m was initially a bit disappointed, but it’s still within the same UK renaissance era, so I’m not too mad. I’m not sure how he will stage it, but I hope he doesn’t get too dizzy if you know what I mean. Now I think it’s solid. I’m sure the UK will get a good placing (but then again, I wanted that last year, but you can’t always replicate 2022 sadly). 8/10.

Although he is an automatic qualifier, Olly will perform at the 1st semi-final on May 7 between Ireland and Ukraine

EUROVISION 2024 REVIEW: Italy

Alternative Title: The Italian Boredom Project

This country is still riding on a high after their latest win in 2021. Here is Italy’s entry: Angelina Mango — La Noia

Angelina Mango (April 10, 2001) is an Italian singer-songwriter. She became the first Italian woman in 10 years to win San Remo on February 10, 2024, culminating a 5-day music festival that predates Eurovision itself.

I’ll be honest, I needed this song to win Sanremo. Everybody is saying Loredana, Annalisa, but I don’t feel either of them. I have La Noia on repeat, but somehow it’s not in my top 5. However, Italy has been consistent in terms of where people have been placing it. But overall, great song. Dance the cumbia away. 9.5/10

Although she is an automatic qualifier, Angelina will perform at the 2nd semi-final on May 9 between Estonia and Israel
